Victory Gardens
Misc.Betsy,
This post brings back a lot of memories of World War II.
A lot of people, my parents included, planted "victory gardens".
I remember helping my Mom can tomatoes, green beans, etc. So we would have vegetables for the winter months.
We also went to farm markets to get peaches and strawberries to can and make jelly.
We had a pear tree in our yard and we canned those and made jelly also.
I had three uncles and a cousin who were in the war. Thankfully, they all came home okay.
My Dad was an air raid warden. The government conducted blackouts during the war. Everyone had to turn out all their lights, and pull the shades down, no street lights. The wardens made sure that everyone did what they were supposed to. These blackouts were practice, to be ready if we were ever attacked.
Thanks for the memories!
