How Saw Mill Gravy got its name

Misc.
many recipes for saw mill gravy are posted on the net as well as other places. cracker barrell's menue includes sawmill gravy. someone asks the question, "why is it called sawmill gravy?" here is the answer.

sawmill gravy was invented during the depression when flour was scarce but coenmeal was plentiful. for that reason, corn meal was substituted for flour. the result was a coarse texture resembling saw dust; hense, saw mill gravy.

what a tragedy that fine restaurants don't research the topic before advertising. they don't know what swmill gravy is.
