Recipe(tried): Catsup-Based Barbecue Sauce (2)

Hi Janice,

I don't have the Sphere recipe, but here are two catsup-based barbecue sauces that we enjoy. I'm sorry that don't know the author of either, but I remember copying the second recipe out of an old cookbook at my Aunt's farmhouse as a teenager back in the '60s. The index card it's on is yellowed and speckled with grease splatters from use over the years now which means it's a keeper!

Rib Ticklin Barbecue Sauce
Makes about 2 cups

1/2 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup catsup
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup prepared mustard
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
brown sugar to taste

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes or more to desired thickness.

Barbecue Sauce (without added sugar)

1 onion, finely chopped
1 cup catsup
2 cups water
4 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or Tabasco Sauce

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer to desired thickness. Or use uncooked sauce over chicken, pork, or spareribs. Mix ingredients and pour over meat or poultry; cook, covered, until done (last 1/2 hour uncovered).
