Recipe: Fruit Bars

Misc.

I've got just the thing for you!!
Fruit Bars
2-1/3 c. sugar 1 c. plus 3 T. shortening
3 eggs 1/2 c. honey
2 T. water 5 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt 4 tsp vanilla
3 tsp cinnamon 1-1/2 lbs. dates(cut in half)
1 lb. raisins 2 c. walnuts, large pieces
Blend sugar and shortening, then eggs, honey and water, then flavoring, salt, soda and cinnamon, then flour, dates and raisins. The nuts may be stirred in by hand. This makes a large recipe. Chill dough for easier handling. Form into long rolls about 3/4" thick. Place 3 or 4 rolls on a cookie sheet. Press down slightly and brush with beaten egg and milk. Bake at 350 degrees. When still warm cut into bars. Watch closely, they burn easily. Candied fruit may be added at Christmas.
