OLD-FASHIONED BAKED BEANS
"Many fond memories, as well as pride, often center around a particular cook's recipe for baked beans. Here's a recipe that will stir up warm memories for you and your family."
2 cups dried navy beans (1 pound) sorted and rinsed
13 cups water, divided use
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 teaspoon salt
6 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
Heat beans and 10 cups water to boiling in a 4-quart Dutch oven. Boil uncovered 2 minutes.
Stir in remaining ingredients except the remaining 3 cups water.
Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
Stir in the remaining 3 cups water. Bake uncovered for 2 hours to 2 hours and 15 minutes or longer, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender and desired consistency.
