Recipe(tried): Orange pomanders
Holidays, Celebrations All you have to do for short term use is stud the orange, lemon or lime with cloves. However, I found that is easier said than done. When I tried it, I had a terrible time getting the cloves to penetrate the orange and many of them broke off. One hint was to use a toothpick to pierce the orange before trying to put in the cloves. Do this one at a time, though because the holes sort of disappear. A better idea is to use a citrus stripper and remove narrow strips of peel in a decorative pattern or from top to bottom as though you were cutting it in wedges. Then insert the cloves in the grove the stripper made. You could experiment with both ways and see what works best on your fruit.
years ago when I made them, powdered orris root was dusted on the studded fruit for preservation. I haven't seen it mentioned recently, though.
