Recipe: Self-Frosted Oatmeal Cookies (Quaker Oats recipe, 1960's)

FOR THE COOKIES:
1 1/4 cups sifted enriched flour
314 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup soft shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups Quaker Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
FOR THE TOPPING:
4 milk chocolate bars (about 1 oz. each)
Pecan halves
Sift together flour, baking soda and salt into bowl. Add shortening, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth, about 2 minutes. Blend in rolled oats. (Dough will be quite stiff.)
Shape dough to form small balls; place 2-inches apart on greased cooky sheet. Flatten each with bottom of glass covered with waxed paper.
Bake In moderate oven (350 degrees F) 12 to 15 minutes. .
Remove cookies from oven; immediately place a small square of milk chocolate on each. Remove cookies from cooky sheet; press half pecan into chocolate on each.
Makes 3 1/2 dozen cookies
