Recipe(tried): Sweet Kugel For Judi
Misc.ADVERTISEMENT
Sweet Kugel
10 oz bag of noodles (I use wide ribbon or egg noodles but you may use whatever you wish)
2 apples, chopped
1/2 cup walnuts
1/4-1/2 cup raisins
small jar of jelly ( flavor your choice)
cinnamon
4 eggs, beaten
chicken fat or butter
Cook the noodles and drain. Add 1 Tbs. of chicken fat to the noodles while they are hot and toss. Chop apples and walnuts and add to noodles. (Amounts can be varied according to personal taste). Add a good part of a small jar of jelly, some good choices are strawberry, pineapple, or apricot or your favorite. Add lots of cinnamon; the kugel will take on its brown color when cooked. Taste and adjust jelly or cinnamon,if necessary. Add eggs. Put 2 TBS. melted chicken fat or butter in 9X13 baking dish. Put the noodles in the baking dish and bake at 375 for an hour or until set.
Note: My grandmother did cook with chicken fat all of the time as this was part of the traditional Jewish cooking methods. I know some people aren't familiar with cooking with chicken fat, but it's just like some cook with bacon grease. It adds a very distinct flavor. I don't have chicken fat on hand most of the time and so I just use margarine or butter and the recipe comes out fine.
Enjoy!
