Betsy, NY (9:35:56 pm) :
Sidewalk Chalk

1 cup plaster of paris (do not pack)
almost 1/2 cup cool water
Liquid tempera paint in various colors
(your kid's teacher may "donate" the paint in exchange for a few
sticks of chalk)
Margarine tubs or other disposable mixing containers
Disposable molds
(we used toilet paper rolls with tape covering one end to make a
"cup")

This stuff won't work on chalkboards, it's too hard, but it works great
on sidewalks and lasts MUCH longer than store bought stuff. I made it
for christmas presents this year for kids, and it worked great!
Warning: this is a fun and messy project!

Pour plaster into a container. Using a disposable stick, stir in most
of the water. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of liquid tempera, mixing well,
especially at the bottom. Add a little more water so the mixture
thickens, stir well, and pour into the molds. Remove the molds after
the chalk is completely dry.

Risa G., N.J. (9:42:32 pm) : I have a weird recipe for a coffee drink (if this really goes under the heading of "odd" recipe:

Soak 1 c. used coffee grinds in 9 cups of water overnight. Strain out the grinds and bottle the liquid.

Take 1 c. of the liquid, 3/4 c. milk, 2 T. hersheys syrup and 2 c. ice. Whirl in blender until the ice cubes disappear.
Pour into 2 glasses (12 oz).

Betsy, NY (9:47:28 pm) :
Collage or Decoupage Glue

3 parts white household glue*
1 part warm water

*A thin solution of Paperhanger's Paste or Waterproof or Glass Glue can be substituted.

1. Combine glue with water in a jar or bottle with a screw top lid.

2. Shake until well mixed.

How to use it: To make a collage, brush a thin layer of glue to the back surface of paper scraps or pictures and smooth
them onto a piece of cardboard.

Bubbles, NH (9:50:45 pm) : After cooking on your electric stove, place a half filled teakettle with water and put it on that
empty hot burner, it will give you some warm rinse water and it no one will accidently touch it.

Risa G., N.J. (9:53:16 pm) : Bubbles, that is a good tip.

Another good one, if you have kids, is to use only back burners for cooking (if possible.) That way they don't get
anywhere near the hot burner.

Also, use those Safety 1st items. We bought the ones that go over the knobs on the stove and now my son doesn't try to
turn them off. He isn't tall enough to look at the burners or to touch them yet.

Risa G., N.J. (9:55:34 pm) : Really, don't feel bad CarolB. I only feel bad about not being crafty when I see my mother
knitting at 100 mph and crocheting and needlepointing, etc. She is really crafty.

Kathy, IN - true!! I made a couple of scarves and pot holders. That was it. I think I made 5 pot holders and gave them
away. I also made 3 scarves and I said that is it!!

Bubbles, NH (9:55:51 pm) : When greasing a cake pan or whatever, I use a plastic sandwich bag. Place your hand in it and
grease your pan. Keeps those finger clean. and you can get into the corners easily.

Risa G., N.J. (9:57:06 pm) : Bubbles, also another good greasing tip (also from Too Hot Tamales):

Save the wrappers from butter in a ziploc bag. When you need some butter to grease a pan, just take one out and then
throw the paper out.

Bubbles, NH (10:02:00 pm) : The sticky stuff from a sticker on a glass can be removed by rubbing some vegetable oil on it.
Be sure the object that you are cleaning does not stain from the oil.

Kathy, IN (10:02:19 pm) : Has anyone ever made German Easter Eggs?
I saw them demonstrated once on Tv and came across them again today in a country magazine. They look so pretty, but I've never trued them. They almost look like wood. By the way the eggs are inedible and the recipe says should last for years.

Raw eggs at room temperature
3-4 c. yellow onion skins ( can collect in bag or get loose skins from grocery bin)
1/2 c vinegar(to set color)
pantyhose squares and twisties
large pot with water
ferns, flowers or paper cutouts
The magazine said to boil the eggs 1 1/2 hours and set on counter for week only keep non-cracked eggs that show no
sign of spoilage. The TV show did not precook eggs.
dampen egg and decoration and cover with hose and secure in palce with twisty. Put eggs in pot of water and vinegar
and onion skins. Simmer 2-4 hours or until desired shade. Drain in egg carton.
If giving for a gift wait for a week and again check for cracks or spoilage. These eggs are supposed to last for quite
some time.

Bubbles, NH (10:04:05 pm) : To get sticky residue off of plastic storage containers make a baking soda paste and scrub it.

Bubbles, NH (10:13:20 pm) : We've done pencil boxes, and banka and

SueA (10:15:16 pm) : Cloud Dough
3 cups flour
2 Tablespoons powdered tempera
1/2 cup salad oil
water
Mix together the flour, tempera, and oil. Add enough water to make a soft, pliable, elastic-like dough. This dough does
not keep well.

Mix together the flour, tempera, and oil. Add enough water to make a soft, pliable, elastic-like dough. This dough does

SueA (10:57:09 pm) : Silly Putty
2 cup white all-purpose glue (can get bulk size at hardware store)
1 cup liquid starch
Mix together well. Its a good idea to give kids a piece of wax paper to work it on. Use like the Silly Putty you buy.
Store in an airtight container. This is NOT to be eaten.

Risa G., N.J. (9:49:17 pm) : I have some interesting kitchen tips:

I got this one from Two Hot Tamales:

Instead of letting your cutting board slip around when cutting, place a damp kitchen towel under it.
It works like a charm.

When you want salt to dissolve in a recipe (like when baking) use sea salt or iodized salt and not
kosher or coarse salt. Coarse salt doesn't dissolve quickly.

Kim,LA (10:08:23 pm) : My mom always cleans stained dishes with an little clorax in her water. It seem to work I tried it after crawfish season was over.

Kathy, IN (10:12:01 pm) : A tip I've found helpful is we went through with an indelible marker and
numbered all of our plasticware and lids so they would match together easier when we are digging
through for a matched set.
