Recipe: Tony Burgers (using ground beef and vegetables, HOME TV Show newsletter, 1990)
Main Dishes - Beef and Other MeatsTONY BURGERS
"A burger with more taste and less fat"
1 lb. extra lean ground beef
1 or 2 small zucchini, coarsely grated
1 or 2 small yellow squash, coarsely grated
12 small mushrooms, coarsely grated
1 small onion, coarsely grated
2 small carrots, coarsely grated
1 small green, yellow, or red bell pepper, coarsely grated
1 egg (optional)
ADD TO TASTE:
Grated cheddar cheese
Worcestershire sauce
Ketchup
Parsley flakes
Basil flakes
FOR SERVING:
Whole wheat hamburger buns
Lettuce
Tomato slices
Mix lean ground beef with all ingredients, except buns, lettuce and tomato, with hands, like meatloaf. Form into chubby patties.
Broil in oven, not on rack, but in pan. Do not fry.
Serve on whole wheat buns with lettuce and tomato.

"Valerie Harper the star of TV's new series City, is married to Tony Caciotti, the series' producer and a fitness trainer. Her husband is into healthy living and has changed Valerie's lifestyle for the better. She exercises properly and regularly now and has taken cooking cues from Tony. He created a healthy burger, using only one quarter the amount of beef. It's easy to make. Valerie named it the Tony Burger."
