ISO: Balsamic Vinegar, Substitution

Friend of mine has asked if there is a sub for balsamic Vinegar in a chicken recipe .. very expensive for someone on a limited budget to purchase if you don't know what it tastes like or cooks like .etc. Can anyone give me an answer to give her.
In Canada $15.00 for a very small bottle. What else can it be used in beside this chicken dish .. or how well /long does it keep? It may be worth buying if it stores well and can be used for other recipes.
