ISO: Cleaning a steam iron?

I'm not sure if this is the correct board for this question! Does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning a steam iron? Mine is leaving spots on the clothes. After I get it clean I will use distilled water, but must clean it first! Have thought of vinegar, but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
