ISO: How to use vintage perculator?
Misc. In my new digs, I just don't have the room or plug-ins for an electric coffee maker or perc. Therefore, I am reverting to an old fashioned perculator. This is the type made of aluminum that you put on top of a stove burner. My grandmother used this daily and the coffee was great, but I don't remember how to make coffee with it (it's been many years). I'm hoping some of you who camp use this type of coffee pot and can help me.
The pot has a glass globe on top with a metal basket, long insert and a basket cover with holes. What grind of coffee can I use? Should I have the flame at medium or high? How long do I brew it (how do I know when it's done)? Any tips?
I also have an old fashioned drip coffee maker from, I assume, the late 20s or 30s. Can I assume that I just heat the water in a kettle and pour it over the coffee (again, a metal basket)?
Thanks! I'm looking forward to putting Gramma's kitchen equipment back into use.
