Recipe: Sugar Plum Loaf (yeast bread using candied fruit)

SUGAR PLUM LOAF

1/2 cake yeast or 4 pkg. dry yeast
1 c. warm water
1 1/2 c. warm milk
1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
4 eggs
2 c. raisins
1 c. nut meats
2 c. candied fruit
8 c. flour or more

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, shortening and eggs. Beat in flour. Add raisins, nuts, and candied fruit. Let rise until double.

Punch down. Let rise again.

Shape into round loaves and let rise until light.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Frost with a glaze. Decorate with cherries, whole nuts or colored sugar.

Makes 5 large or 6 small loaves.
