ISO: preserving fruit cake

years ago I saw a show , a man had preserverd a fruit cake for 17 years, by wrapping in cheese cloth and soaking in rum, periodically during the years, remove the cake and resoak in rum .is this possible? I don't remember the exact way, do you Know?
