ISO: What kind of computer (to be set up in my kitchen) should I buy?

Misc.

Hello all,

My request is not REALLY a gadget but something I will use a lot in my kitchen
to chat and check out recipes. I'm wondering what kinds of computers does
everyone use. My uncle is retired from a large computer hardware company and
builds computers on the side. Should I get him to build one? Should I go to
an electronics store and just let them sell me one? Either way I don't want
to be taken advantage of. Do I purchase a monitor, keyboard, etc. all at
once or buy individual pieces. What do I need to look for to run the 'Net? I really want to get set up before the end of the month. I would appreciate any ideas.

My 6 year old will be using the computer also.

Thanks,
