Does anyone know how long to cook whole wheat berries? Also the measurement of water to grain would be helpful. I bought some but all of the recipes that I have call for "cooked wheat berries". Thanks!

I have made the honey wheat berry bread from The Bread Machine Cookbook IV by Donna German. The instructions in it say to take 1/2 cup wheat berries and 1 1/2 cups water and 3 tablespoons honey; combine in pan and bring to a rolling boil for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. cover the pan and remove from heat and let sit for 6-12 hours or overnight. Drain any standing water before adding the berries to remaining ingredients. These instructions are for a medium loaf of bread but maybe you could adjust amounts for whatever you are wanting to use them for. And I imagine you could not use the honey in there if you don't want it. I left the berries overnight and they were nice and plump the next morning.

Wash the wheat berries and place in a saucepan with about 4 times as much water as berries. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 60 to 70 minutes.

You can also make wheat berries in a slow cooker (especially nice for breakfast, since they're ready and waiting for you when you get up). The night before, wash berries and place in slow cooker with about 4 times as much water. Start on high until water comes to a boil, then drop to Low or Keep Warm setting and run overnight.

In both cases, you will need to drain water from the berries when they're fully cooked. It's probably better to add too much water than too little--if you skimp, the wheat berries might not rehydrate properly and you'd have some tough little seeds in the mix.
