Are you sure it's a soup?

In my Scottish cook book there is a recipe for sovies, but it's not a soup, and does not contain meatballs. It's a side dish of cold meat, potatoes and onion, layered and almost covered in broth and then cooked or baked.
I've never tried it or been in Scotland, so I just refer from my book...
