Date or fig?

Misc.
I have a.... hmmm... date tree or fig "bush" in my back yard. I've searched online to find a picture of it, but I can't find anything looking like it. It seems as if a fig "bush" describes it, but the picture looked nothing like it.

It's a HUGE woody-stalked "bush"... it almost resembles a blooming onion shape! Then... in the summer, new green "shoots" come out.. with big leaves.. and then the dates/figs grow off of these shoots. Then.. these shoots turn into the woody "branches/arms" over the winter, and the cycle starts all over.

Any clue what this is???
