Misc.

Amazed by the speedy reply from Reynolds re:
leaky foil. Here's what I was told.

"Occasionally, aluminum foil may react with the food that is being covered and
form small pinholes in the foil. This may occur with any brand or weight of
foil and results in a harmless reaction that does not affect the safety of the
food.

"What makes this reaction difficult to predict is that you may wrap the same
food with the same roll of foil again and find that the foil is unaffected;
however, it may happen under the following conditions:

1. When aluminum and a dissimilar metal are in contact in the presence of
moisture, an electrolytic reaction may occur, causing a breakdown of the
aluminum. To avoid this reaction, we recommend that aluminum, glass, ceramic,
plastic or paper containers be used, rather than sterling silver or
silverplated trays, stainless steel or iron utensils.

2. If the reaction occurred while using an aluminum, glass, ceramic, plastic or
paper container, the reaction was chemical. This reaction may occur when salt,
vinegar, highly acidic foods or highly spiced foods come into contact with
aluminum foil.

"The product of either of these reactions is a harmless aluminum salt, which
can be safely consumed. Aluminum is nontoxic and aluminum salts are nontoxic.
Some aluminum salts are used to compound medicines for the treatment of stomach
disorders. The food can be safely eaten; however, the aluminum salt particles
can be removed to improve its appearance.

"We hope this information will be helpful to you in your future use of aluminum
foil . . ."
