Julie - Thoughts about buttercream icing

Hi Julie: I used to decorate cakes, including wedding cakes. I usually used Crisco-based frostings. However, I cannot think of any reason why buttercream frosting would not work.

I think you would need to be sure the frosting is thick, possibly using a bit more powdered sugar in the frosting you use in piping tubes.

Also, decorating cakes in a room that is too humid or too hot always caused me some problems. I think that might also be true with buttercream frosting.
