method question (re: Shake, Rattle and Roll Pie Crust)

This is the first I've heard of this method and maybe I'm missing something. Do you cut the shortening into smaller bits? How does it blend with the other ingredients and not just end up one shortening ball covered with flour?

Has anyone tried this? I'm baffled and curious.
