Re: Wood Stove Cooking

Misc.
I first learned to cook on a wood stove. I don't know of any sites that can tell you how to do it nor do I think I can tell you very well without demonstrating. If you have ever cooked on a campfire you have a good start in learning. As to recipes, just use your regular food recipes. The main thing is too learn to control your fire and keep it even, especially if you are baking. Use hard wood for cooking because it holds heat steady and makes good coals. If you use soft wood it burns up to fast, makes soot and will eventually burn out your firebox. You will need to practice controling your draft and dampers as you go. I would suggest you start out by making things like pots of beans that need slow simmering. As you learn your stove, move on to more complicated things. Nothing tastes quite like an egg that has been fried on a wood stove and I can't tell you why it tastes better. It just does.
My Grandma cooked everything on wood and she could make anything. So just go for it. It's far easier than you may think. Good luck and have fun.
