In my area (Florida) many people rent orchids as decorations fort he tables..maybe you could rent Cacti from a local nursery or landscaper? Also, how about small paper bags filled with sand and candles? If you're setting up a buffet, maybe you could get some unglazed Terra Cotta tiles from a local tile place and use them as servers...
