Sandy,
My mother-in-law gave me this recipe about 33 years ago. It is a tried and true recipe. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Banana Cake
1 1/2 sticks butter
2 eggs
2 cups sugar
Cream together.
Add:
2 cups flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 c. Chopped Nuts (optional)
Mix well. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
May use a 13x9-inch pan or 2 round layers. It makes a great layer cake which is what I am making today.
Banana Icing
1 stick softened butter
1 mashed banana
1 (16 oz) box powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
milk to smooth
Cream butter and powdered sugar together. Add mashed banana & vanilla. If it is too thick smooth with milk.
Spread on cooled cake.
