Buttermilk Donuts

These are delicate with a marvelous flavor.

2 eggs beaten
1 cup sugar
1 cup buttermilk
2 tbsp. melted shortening
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Beat eggs and sugar together. Beat in the buttermilk and melted shortening. Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg and stir into the egg mixture. Mix well but don't beat. Turn out onto a floured board, knead lightly, then roll out and cut, deep fry 370 turning only once Drain on brown paper or a paper towel.
