Recipe: Clay for Play and Posterity (homemade play dough)
CraftsCLAY FOR PLAY AND POSTERITY
BAKING METHOD:
1 cup salt
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups flour
Mix salt, water, and oil. Add flour. After shaping, clay can be baked at 250 degrees F for several hours.
OVERNIGHT DRYING METHOD:
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups baking soda (1 pound)
1 1/4 cups cold water
food coloring, tempera, or acrylic paints (optional)
shellac or clear nail polish (optional)
Mix cornstarch, baking soda, and water together. Stir in a saucepan over medium heat for about 4 minutes until mixture thickens to the consistency of moist mashed potatoes.
Remove from heat, turn out on a plate, and cover with a damp cloth until cool. Knead as you would bread dough. Shape as desired or store in an airtight container or plastic bag.
To color, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before mixing with the starch and soda. Or leave objects to dry and then paint with tempura or acrylics. Dip in shellac or brush with clear nail polish to seal.
