Recipe(tried): Cleaning silver tarnish
Misc.WOW ~~ blast from the past .... 10 years original post was done. I read all connected ....
AS far as getting the tarnish from the rubber banded area.
Ginny it takes what we call ELBOW GREASE and haggerty's or other POLISH type cleaner. You have to rub and rub to spot. K-mart had a generic that was like haggerty's years ago ... maybe they still do. Once the rubber band marks happen you just have to work harder on those marks. But use caution again DON'T use tarni-shield or other "quick dip it" cleaners they eat the silver and leave no protection. You need one that lists it as polish and protector.
Prehaps if the bands were on long enough (years) the silver is eaten and gone -- that can happen but it takes a long time and depends on the quility of the plate (double, quadurple ect.) For example the bottoms of spoons tend to lose plate faster then the rest of spoon if it is a thin plate.
If that is the case (silver worn off) you can get the item re-plated -- I assume it would be expensive but if the piece is vaulable to you, part of a set or sentimental -- it might be worth it. Looks great when done too!
Good Luck Ginny let us know how it works ...
