Recipe: Devil's Food Waffles (BH&G Cookbook, 1930)

Breakfast and Brunch
DEVIL'S FOOD WAFFLES

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, well-beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cups pastry flour
2 teaspoonfuls of baking powder
a pinch of salt
2 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
1 teaspoonful vanilla
a pinch of ground cinnamon
FOR SERVING:
whipped cream, syrup, or marshmallows

Cream butter with sugar; whip in eggs, then milk.

Sift flour with baking powder and a pinch of salt. Add to the liquid mixture and beat hard.

Melt chocolate over a kettle and pour it into the batter with vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon.

Heat the waffle iron, brush it with butter and bake the same as any plain waffle.

Serve hot with whipped cream, sirup, or with marshmallows melting between 2 waffles.
