Hi Peggie,
Maybe this will help. My family does not like fruitcake either.
My sister gave me this recipe many years ago and everyone loves it!!
It does have dates but I was told that you don't have to use them.
But I always do.

Christmas Hawaiian Fruitcake

Recipe By : "Our Family Favorites"
Serving Size : 3 Preparation Time :0:00

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
Fruitcake:
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter or margarine
4 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
or
1/2 cup milk and 1/2 tbs. vinegar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
3 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 package chopped dates
8 oz. candied pineapple
8 oz. maraschino cherries
7 oz. coconut

Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp. vanilla

300 -- oven Makes 3 -- 8" loaf pans.

Mix in order given.
Bake 1 1/2 hours.

Bring powdered sugar and orange juice to a boil, add vanilla.
Pour over cakes while still hot.
Let stand in pans until cool.
Wrap in cheese cloth or foil & set in fridge 2 weeks or more before cutting.

NOTES : This is very easy and yummy!!!
Especially if you are like my family and don't like fruitcake.

I hope this helps. I know I make it every year and give it as gifts. It does make 3 loaves so I can give some away and keep some for home.
