Here's my grandmother's Red Velvet Cake and icing recipe. Hope you like it.

MAMA'S RED VELVET CAKE

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large egg
2 tablespoons cocoa
3 ounces red food coloring
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar




Cream butter, sugar and vanilla.
Add eggs, 1 at a time, and mix well.
Make thin paste from cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed
Add flour and buttermilk to creamed alternately, a little at t time, be-ginning and ending with flour.
Mix soda and vinegar and blend into mixture.
Pour into two 8 in. greased and floured pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.

MAMA'S RED VELVET CAKE ICING

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

4 1/2 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Make a paste of flour and milk, not using all of milk.
Use wire wisk to beat mixture while adding rest of milk.
Cook over low heat until thick beating constantly. Cool. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla.
Beat until fluffy.
Add cooled mixture and continue beating until consistency of Whipped cream.
Spread between layers and top of cake.
