Recipe(tried): Here's a GREAT sugar cookie recipe!!!

Misc.

Vicki, this is a very old family recipe. It's a soft drop cookie recipe--the original recipe doesn't have nutmeg, but I'm sure that a little nutmeg could be added very easily.

3/4 cup margarine or butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg

1/2 cup sour milk
1/2 tsp. baking soda

2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. lemon rind

Cream together the butter, sugar and egg.

Make sour milk (Put 2 tsp. lemon juice in a measuring cup and add milk to equal 1/2 cup. Stir). ADD BAKING SODA TO THE SOUR MILK.

Add sour milk mix alternately with the dry ingredients.

Stir in lemon rind and vanilla. Here's where you could add the nutmeg if you wanted--I would say about 1/4 tsp. You would probably have to try this amount to see if this was the flavor you were looking for.

Put heaping teaspoonsful on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 . I let the cookie dough spread a little on the cookie sheet in the hot oven and then I sprinkle with sugar or cinnamon/sugar mix. I make some of both because some of the family like the sugar and some like the cinnamon sugar. It would be interesting to make a nutmeg sugar. I've never done that. But since you're looking for that flavor, it might be good to experiment of a couple of cookies. I think I'll try nutmeg in these the next time I make them just to see what they're like. I don't pay attention to the baking time, but probably 10 minutes or so.

Hope that this recipe is close to what you're looking for.
