SOUR CREAM APPLE KUCHEN
"Serve this moist, fragile coffee cake directly from the baking pan while warm, or let it cool and cut into wedges for a deliciously different dessert."
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 cup sugar, divided use
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/ teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup pared, shredded apple (1 large apple)
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted shortening or oil
1/2 cup dairy sour cream
Sift flour with 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; set aside.
Reserve 2 tablespoons nuts; stir remaining nuts and shredded apple into flour mixture.
Blend together egg, milk and melted shortening. Stir into flour mixture until well blended. Turn into greased 9-inch round pan. Spoon sour cream over top in spiral pattern, leaving center uncovered.
Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup sugar over sour cream and batter. Top with reserved 2 tablespoons nuts.
Bake at 400 degrees F 30 to 35 minutes.
Serve warm for breakfast brunch, cold for dessert.
