I have been doing this for years, and it works great!
Before placing food (steaks, vegetables, etc.) in a freezer bag, wrap them first in inexpensive plastic wrap. Place the wrapped food into the freezer bag, and close. Open a very small part of the seal -- enough to insert a straw. Place the straw in the opening, and suck out as much air as you easily can (gripping the bag opening around the straw). Then, re-close the bag as you rermove the straw. The end result is food that is well-protected from freezer burn because much of the air has been removed, and the plastic wrap forms an effective barrier against the small amount of remaining air. An added benefit: by wrapping the food in plastic wrap as I have described, the freezer bags can be re-used many times (no need to wash them -- the food does not make contact with the interior of the bag!).
Like I said, I've been doing this for years. It must be a good idea, because recently I saw a new product offered by one of the major-brand producers of freezer bags that incorporates some plastic wrap inside the bage, specifically for the purpose of reducing freezer burn. Howerver, these bags are quite a bit more expensive than the "regular" freezer bags. And I doubt that they can be readily re-used!
I noticed that recently, one of the freezer bag companie introduced a product that does the same, but is grossly expensive!
