Recipe(tried): Hummm...the pumpkin variation is not ...

Misc.
there. Substitute 1/2 cup of the applesauce with 1/2 cup sweet potato, plus still add in 1/4 cup of applesauce--it will make a difference.

For a pumpkin muffin, just do the same--substitute 1/2 cup of the applesauce with pumpkin puree, plus still add in 1/4 cup of applesauce.

You can also use 1/2 whole wheat flour and 1/2 all-purpose flour, just don't use all whole wheat.

These muffins are simply delicious and I have baked them hundreds of time.
