Recipe: Low-Sodium Microwave Applesauce Bars (1980's)

LOW-SODIUM MICROWAVE APPLESAUCE BARS

1/4 eup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter or margarine
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup applesauce
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1/4 cup raisins
2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for sprinkling on top)

In glass mixing bowl, heat butter in microwave on HIGH 15 to 30 seconds or until softened.

Blend in brown sugar, then beat in applesauce. Stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Stir in nuts and raisins, Spread In 8-lnch square baking dish greased on bottom only.

Cook in microwave, uncovered, on HIGH 6 to 7 minutes or until no longer doughy, rotating dish twice. Cool.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut Into 2-inch squares.

Makes 16 bars, about 30 milligrams sodium per bar
