Recipe: Recipes and Ideas for a Pizza Party

Holidays, Celebrations
Hi flhomeschoolmom! Would a "neat sixteen" party be appropriate for a boy (does anyone even say neat anymore)? LOL!

I have some suggestions for you in regards to food for your son's birthday party. I'm sure you feel the first priority is what your son will love - after all, it's his big day and everyone else is just "along for the ride", so it's great that he loves pizza - that's very easy and budget friendly!

If this will be a dinner party you can serve a tossed salad on the side - if the party is after dinnertime, just the pizza for nibbling on should be fine, maybe along with some cut up veggies and dip and bowls of munchies. Popcorn would be a very low cost snack and if you put out shakers of seasonings everyone can make their own flavored popcorn - hot sauce, cinnamon sugar, Parmesan cheese, garlic salt, chili powder, etc.

I don't know if you've made pizza from scratch before, but in case you haven't, here's a recipe for you to try:

Fleishmann's Master Pizza Dough with Quick Tomato Sauce and Variations, Brown and Serve and Freeze Ahead

With that Master Pizza Dough recipe you should get about 5 batches of dough from a 5 pound bag of flour. If you make thin crusts, that would give you 60 servings, making 10 (12-inch) pizzas or 5 (10x15-inch) baking sheets. If you think you'll need more pizzas/servings than 2 slices per person, you can save some money on toppings by making a couple more pizzas with just olive oil and chopped fresh garlic for topping - sprinkle on some herbs if you like.

Here's a video showing how to shape dough on a baking sheet. She mentions baking it on the bottom rack of the oven but if you're prebaking the crusts I would set the pan on the middle rack or it may get too brown in the final baking.

I suggest you experiment with the recipe before the big day to see if you like how it turns out, how many pizzas you get out of one batch of dough, the thickness, size and shape you want and figure out any adjustments you need to make. Your son might have fun helping you with this and having some say in the finished product.

The "brown and serve option" in the recipe above, for prebaking and refrigerating the crusts (without topping), will give you a good head start with the pizzas (but I wouldn't freeze them ahead for this). You can also get all your toppings sliced, shredded and ready ahead of time.

The night of the party, you'll need about 8 minutes in the oven for each pizza - you can make an assembly line for topping all the crusts then just start popping them in the oven. If you make 5 pizzas you'll need about an hour or more for the baking and topping. My suggestion is either assign the baking to a helpful friend so you can join the party or bring a timer outside with you so you can mingle while you're waiting - you wouldn't want to be gone in the kitchen for over an hour!

If you would rather not get into making the dough yourself, you should be able to buy pizza dough at your local grocery (ask in the bakery department - also, ask them for a price on sheet pizzas - baked and ready-to-bake, they may surprise you). If not, sometimes pizza shops will sell their dough by the pound if you ask nicely. If all that fails, you can use 1 pound loaves of frozen bread dough to make your pizza crusts. With any of these purchased doughs you can still use the "brown and serve" method given in the recipe above to prebake the crusts.

My apologies for probably telling you many things that you already know!

Happy birthday to your son and happy memories to the whole family!
