Recipe(tried): Toasting without (electric) toaster
Misc. As six has already said, you can toast bread under a broiler (griller in Australia).
You can also toast bread using a camping toaster, which is used over a gas flame (buy from camping supply shop)
If you really want to do it the old fashioned way, you can toast bread in front of an open fire (hot coals are best). You can make a toasting fork from heavy duty wire. It is a bit hard to describe here but you need a coulpe of yards or wire, make a fork shape at one end, bending to form a cradle to hold the bread and the rest to make a long handle. Stand this near the coals and the bread will toast from the heat of the coals.
I remember using one of these when I visited my grandparents. Swaggies (homeless drifters) used to make them from fenching wire and sell to people, some were quite ornate with the way the wire was formed.
