Misc. Title: Update on Volcano Cake recipe

Since the issue of raw eggs has come up, here is an alternative "lava" recipe for the Volcano Cake that does not use raw egg whites. There is also a suggestion for an easier way to make the cake. This recipe came from a Kid's Crafts BB. I haven't tried it yet but would like to make it for one of my kids later this year. If anyone tries it, please let me know how it works!
Thanks! (P.S. - I will post the original recipe also in case anyone missed it - enjoy!)
Volcano Cake Recipe:
6 (8") baked round cakes
Brown & Green Frosting
1 fresh egg with shell scrubbed clean
1 small juice glass or 1 1/2 inch cookie cutter
2-3 drops red food coloring
1 1/2 tsp. sugar
1/4 lb. dry ice
Aluminum Foil
1-2 oz. hot tap water
1)Make 6 (8") round cakes using your own mix or buy cakes.
2)Buy $2-$3 dollars worth of Dry Ice from an ice cream store the day you will need it. Keep the dry ice in freezer. Be sure to handle dry ice with gloves or tongs just to be safe. Also, try Yellow Pages of phone book under Dry Ice as another source for purchase.
3)Use juice glass or cookie cutter to cut out a hole in the center of the top 2 layers of cake. This hole will form a well in the center of cake and hide the special effect.
4)Construct volcano. Starting with 2nd layer from
bottom, trim each layer successively smaller than the previous one (to shape your pyramid or mountain). Once again, last two layers on top are the ones with holes in them.
5) Frost the cake with chocolate frosting.
6) With small piece of aluminum foil, line the well in the center of the volcano.Use juice glass as mold for foil.
7) Frost cake with green frosting as highlights for vegetation.
8) When ready to serve, make lava.
9) LAVA: Separate the cleaned egg and discard the
yolk. Put the egg white in a small mixing bowl with 1 1/2 tsp. sugar and 2-3 drops red food coloring. Beat until egg white starts to thicken. You don't want stiff peaks to form; just thick , foamy texture.
10) Now place 2-3 small chunks of dry ice into the foil lined well of the cake and pour in the red mixture.
Nothing much will happen yet. Now fill your juice glass with hot tap water, and take the Volcano Cake & water to the table where guests are.
11) When ready, simply pour 1-2 oz. of hot water into the egg and dry ice mixture.....and your realistic Volcano Cake will erupt large quantities of orange, foamy "lava" and white "smoke" for several minutes while you serve your delighted guests pieces of genuine Erupting Volcano Cake!
Alternate recipe:
You will need a small, short juice glass or shot glass that will fit snugly in the center hole of the Volcano Cake (a glass 3" tall and 1 1/2" in diameter would be perfect). You will need 1 small box of jell-o, 1 small bottle of lemon juice, and 1 tbsp. of bacarbonate of soda. Make jell-o according to instructions. Cool for 15 minutes. When it is still warm (not hot), fill juice glass 1/2 full from top. Place the glass down into the hole in the cake so lip of glass is flush with top of cake. When ready, put 1 tbsp. of bicarbonate of soda into the glass and briefly stir (1-2
seconds). Jell-o foam will immediately pour out and
flow down cake.
FOR CAKE: You can also substitute 2 angel food
cakes, cutting the top 3" off of one cake and placing it
on top of the other cake.........and stuff wadded up
paper into lower cake to support juice glass. Hope you
have fun
