You could try a little vinegar or lemon juice as a substitute. Just a small amount, however.
In California we can buy 4 packs of small bottles of wine. I believe they hold about 8 ounces each. Sometimes delicatessens sell them individually. Check to see if these are available in Indiana. That way you wouldn't have to purchase an entire fifth. Good luck.
