ISO: Australian to American Metric Conversions

Misc.
Most recipes use cup measurements. Can anyone tell me if the American and Australian cup measurements are the same. I believe I have been told at some point they are not which might explain my failure rate when following Aussie recipes!

Also is there a quick easy to remember way of converting into metric?
