ISO: Cleaning an inside Brick wall ...

I need to know how to clean a wall that is brick -- it is a fireplace wall the the brink is very tired looking.
I do not want to paint it. it is my step-moms house we are repainting and fixing it up while she is out of the country -- nothing drastic just a face lift and this old brick wall is rough and tired -- any help is appriciated!
