ISO: Dulce de Batata

My Mom is 89 yrs. old & from Puerto Rico. From time to time I make her treats that she had when she was young. Have not been able to successfully make the candy. This would really make her day if she had me make Dulce de Batata for her. Have no problem making masamorra without a recipe but for some reason not sure what I'm doing wrong. Even tried mexican piloncillo but it did not help. Thanking you in advance. Myrta T.
