ISO: fig preserves

Misc.

For the first time, I have access to a large fig tree. I would like to know how to make fig preserves. I remember my grandmother picking figs and putting them in a dish pan, washing them and pouring a sack of sugar on them and letting them sit. Then cooking them for what seemed like forever and putting them in jars. Now, that is all I remember and I'm sure there is more to it than that!!! Can you help?
