ISO: How can I make my bread soft and light in texture?

I followed the breadmaking recipes faithfully. However, I noticed the texture of my bread tend to be rather heavy and rubbery. When I use the ready bread mix recipes, the bread turns out very light and soft. I must have missed out something. Can someone pls tell me how to improve my bread?
