ISO: James Beard's clam chowder question

I LOVE manhatten chowder but am a little confused. The article talks about it but then there are no tomatoes. Also the copy mentions potatoes are ignored but then the recipe calls for two thinly sliced. Somewhere the two have been mixed up. Help?
