ISO: Need help on cleaning wood burning stove

Hi Friends, Does anyone have any suggestions on cleaning the exterior of a wood burning stove. The top of ours becomes dull with use and spoted by water if my steamer runs over. In the spring I cleaned the entire outside with a little cooking oil on a cloth and it looked wonderful. When my husband started the first fire this fall, the stove was smoking! (Only Me)! Thank you for any suggestions.
