ISO: sewing machine recommendations

Misc.
I've finally decided to take up sewing; have wanted to learn for many years.

What brands can you recommend? I understand that Singer is no longer the top brand. A few years back, a quilt shop worker recommended Husqvarna (same company that makes chain saws! ), but I can't find a store that carries it.

What features are must-have? I want a machine that will last a lifetime, but I'm pretty sure I don't want all the fancy embroidery stitches that just drive up the cost. (Besides, I can embroider by hand just fine.)

I'm interested in making clothing and home decor (e.g. curtains, slipcovers).

Would appreciate your help!
