ISO: Sourdough Bread

I have been trying to make sourdough bread and had no success with just a flour/water mixture and yesterday tried mashed, boiled potatoes with flour and water. This produced a lot of bubbling action, but there is a pink smear on top of the mixture and I am wondering what other bugs, apart from wild yeast might be growing in it and if they could be dangerous. Or is this normal?
