ISO: spidy dies

Misc.
I write a weekly genealogy column for a newspaper. In one column, I printed a letter from a soldier on the frontlines in WWI. He said he planned to cook chicken and SPIDY DIES for his men for dinner.

I imagine that spidy dies are slang for potatoes, but cannot confirm.

The man was from NJ and his parents were from Ireland.

Can anyone help?
